About Me

My name is Derik Bernhardt,

For over two years now I have had the pleasure of calling the Walla Walla Valley my home. Prior to that, I had lived in the Seattle-Tacoma area mostly, with a couple of longterm stays in the Dallas Texas area. My family has been part of the fabric that makes up the Walla Walla Valley since the turn of the 20th century, I have great-great grandparents, that I never knew, but I get to visit them now.

In my “prior life” I have worn a variety of hats, starting with sales and information technology in the mid to late 90’s, then moving into full systems administration and help desk support in the early 2000’s. When I saw the writing on the wall I signed onto doing computer sales for Dell Computers, after a while I saw a golden opportunity to take my skills to a new industry.

The construction industry held many of the values that I also held dear, recycling and ingenious utilization of tools to name a couple, so I took the plunge and became a Construction Laborer, within 6 months I had been promoted to Assistant Project Manager, where I was put in charge of bidding, time cards, dispatching, vendor networking and project assessment, much of this because of the tools I had learned about during my time in information technology, which made my job more efficient and made me look like a rock star.

After the 2008 recession much of the business I had been helping build ended up going under, but the lessons I learned were ready for another industry. In 2008 I found myself having an injured back due to a work related incident in our construction holding yard, this meant I wasn’t likely to return to the field when the recession lifted. So I found myself working towards a new career, in a field always in demand, medicine. I found a calling working with people afflicted with Alzheimer’s and Dementia, again through the skills and technologies I learned I was able to help streamline our processes while maintaining the highest level of privacy for those we helped, whether they understood what lengths we went to or not.

In 2012 I found myself back in sales, where I was working with a whole foods broker, selling an amazing candy made by two grandmothers in a garage. These grannies made such an amazing candy they even made it onto Shark Tank, but even their exposure on Shark Tank didn’t help them break their goal of making over $1 million in sales, that was done thanks to my team and the technologies we put into place and the networking methods we used, we not only got their product into two new niches not previously considered viable, we helped them break the $2 million in revenue mark the same year we started working with them.

In 2016 I decided to take on finance and accounting, I am still pursuing the required education to adequately take on the levels I need, I will keep you up to date on how I am doing throughout the podcasts life span.

In 2018 I chose to take on the local employment crisis because I do not believe there is truly an employment crisis, only a backward understanding of how to properly perform a job search and poor employer prospects in our area. More information on that to come as well, keep on eye on the blog for updates.

I hope this gives you a little insight on who I am and why and how I do what I do, please feel free to contact me if you have any positive statements or questions I may be able to help with.
